The Carlisle Indian Industrial School


"During a time when the United States government was willing to spend $1 million to eradicate a single Indian tribe out west, Captain Richard Henry Pratt established the Carlisle Indian Industrial School. Pratt's idea was to "save" native children by turning indigenous peoples into white men and women. The most well-known of the boarding schools for Indian children was opened in 1879 in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, and operated for nearly 30 years. This presentation wishes to explore the school's plan to "Kill the Indian, save the Man." Matthew March, Education Curator of the Cumberland County Historical Society, will explore what it means to be stripped of your cultural heritage through forced assimilation as he recounts the history of the school and the stories of the children there."

Carlisle Indian School

"A video HeadStockBurn put together with clips from Carlisle Indian Industrial School (1879--1918) and students. It was founded in 1879 in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, by Captain Richard Henry Pratt. Native American children from 140 tribes were sent to be indoctrinated and assimilated into white society. The goal was to destroy the children's language or cultural ties with their heritage. The ultimate goal of total assimilation can be summed up in the school's slogan: "To civilize the Indian, get him into civilization. To keep him civilized, let him stay." During the years of operation, hundreds of children died at Carlisle. Most died from infectious diseases common in the early 20th century that killed many children. More than 180 were buried in the cemetery. Some suffered physical, emotional, and sexual abuse or malnutrition. Beatings were a common form of punishment for students' grieving, speaking their native languages, not understanding English, attempting to escape, and violating the harsh military rules. Other forms of punishment included hard labor and confinement. Children at Carlisle had their mouths washed with lye soap for speaking in their tribal languages."
